Every November, the turkey ads start, the grocery stores fill up, and everyone wants to know my Thanksgiving plans. And every year, I feel more out of step with it all.
Thanksgiving is a hard holiday for me now. It’s celebrated by murdering millions of turkeys. People overeat, and so much food gets thrown away. And underneath the parades and the pumpkin pie, it celebrates Europeans coming to this land and the genocide of Native Americans: the killing, the stolen land, and the broken promises.
I know that’s not a popular thing to say. But if you’ve ever sat at a holiday table feeling like the only one who noticed, the only one who couldn’t just enjoy it, this one’s for you.
When you’re highly sensitive, you feel what’s on the table: the animals, the waste, the history, the forced cheer. It lands in your body, and it can leave you heavy, tense, or angry while everyone around you is laughing and passing the potatoes. If that brings up anger for you, it’s welcome here. Your sensitivity is seeing something real.
So I made my own holiday. I call it Gratitude Day, and I celebrate my blessings without the turkey. You get to keep the parts that feel good to you and leave out the parts that don’t.
How to create your own Gratitude Day
1. Choose your own table
Make a plant-based meal you love, share a potluck with friends who get it, or enjoy a quiet dinner on your own. Maybe even spend the day relaxing in your PJs. There’s no wrong way to do this.

2. Breathe in your blessings
Before you eat, place a hand on your heart and take three slow breaths. On each exhale, name one thing you’re grateful for. Let your body feel the thanks, not only your mind.

3. Give your body a break from the noise
If you do go to a big gathering, step outside for a few minutes. Feel your feet on the ground and let your exhale be long and slow. You’re allowed to take care of yourself, even on a holiday.
